Most singers don't know how to breathe correctly, and so they end up exerting too much tension on their body. Breathing with force will have a negative effect on your vocals. Your shoulders shouldn't rise too high when you breathe to sing. Make it a point to inhale through your nose as much as you can, in order to let the air to go far deeper. As you inhale, ensure it's not loud as noisy breathing produces unpleasant sound. Also, breathing noisily will make the throat dry rapidly and thus making it difficult for you to sing. Performing some highly effective breathing exercises can improve your voice tremendously.

As an aspiring or professional singer, you need to perform the following exercises on a daily basis to improve your voice: First, you need to keep your shoulders and chest relaxed.

This will make it possible for you to take deeper breaths which will enable you sing high notes and long phrases. Next, take a deep breath of air. Place a hand on your bellybutton and inhale. Make sure the area expands first, that is, you must avoid lifting your shoulders and pushing your stomach out. This exercise may seem difficult at first, but it will become easier once you practice it consistently. The following exercise will be of help to you when you aren't comfortable with breathing.

Lay on the ground with your back, and then place both hands on your waist with your fingers pointing in the direction of your bellybutton. Slowly take a deep breath of air to fill your stomach. As you do this, your hands are going to rise gently.

Exhale after the count of five. Repeat this eight to ten times. This exercise is important because it will enable you know the difference between a deep breath and a shallow breath. The following exercise is helpful to boost breath control. As you sing, don't exhale until the count of five. Gradually increase the numbers to manage how long each breath last. Once you are able to reach twenty-five without being breathless, then you are able to control your breathing.

The exercises discusses above are all inhaling exercises. Exhaling is as well imperative and the following exercise will help you to practice how to breathe correctly when exhaling. Hold a lighting candle about eight inches in front of you. Inhale deeply as previously discussed, and as you exhale, breathes on the lighting candle without making the flame go off. Also, ensure you keep the flame bent as long as you can. These three breathing exercises will help to develop a consistent airflow which will improve your vocal tone, your vocal range and vocal power.
